Exercise and Structure Improve Juvenile Chinook Salmon Rearing Performance

چکیده

This experiment evaluated the use of an exercise routine and vertically-sus-pended structure during juvenile landlocked fall Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha; mean ± SE, initial weight 1.47 0.03 g, total length 56.4 0.4 mm) rearing. Four treatments were used: 1) no nor vertically-suspended structure, 2) 3) 4) structure. Water velocities in tanks without 12 cm/s, where-as consisted seven days at cm/s followed by 18 cm/s. The was array consisting four aluminum angles. Total tank gain percent significantly greater after 50 subjected to compared three other treatments. Gain also receiving with or neither Feed conversion ratio improved all There significant differences for individual fish weight, length, specific growth rate, condition factor among any end experiment. These results indicate that both may be beneficial rearing salmon.

Floodplain farm fields provide novel rearing habitat for Chinook salmon

When inundated by floodwaters, river floodplains provide critical habitat for many species of fish and wildlife, but many river valleys have been extensively leveed and floodplain wetlands drained for flood control and agriculture. In the Central Valley of California, USA, where less than 5% of floodplain wetland habitats remain, a critical conservation question is how can farmland occupying th...

Assessing the suitability of a partial water reuse system for rearing juvenile Chinook salmon for stocking in Washington State.

To assess the suitability of water reuse technology for raising Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp. for stocking purposes, fish health and welfare were compared between two groups of juvenile Chinook salmon O. tshawytscha from the same spawn: one group was reared in a pilot partial water reuse system (circular tanks), and the other group was reared in a flow-through raceway. This observational stu...

Unusual aerobic performance at high temperatures in juvenile Chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha

Understanding how the current warming trends affect fish populations is crucial for effective conservation and management. To help define suitable thermal habitat for juvenile Chinook salmon, the thermal performance of juvenile Chinook salmon acclimated to either 15 or 19°C was tested across a range of environmentally relevant acute temperature changes (from 12 to 26°C). Swim tunnel respiromete...

Early rearing environment impacts cerebellar growth in juvenile salmon.

The size and structure of an animal's brain is typically assumed to result from either natural or artificial selection pressures over generations. However, because a fish's brain grows continuously throughout life, it may be particularly responsive to the environmental conditions the fish experiences during development. Salmon are an ideal model system for studying these effects because natural...
